I've applied for one and it says I should get a response within 70 days. My question is, why does it take so long? Do they verify information ? I have provided them with all official documentation.

Please advise.

Hi, I've had successful study permit extensions in the past. Reason for the delay is CIC's backlog.  Not enough people to process applications.  And yes, they conduct reasonable verifications.  But these are not as extensive as those verifications done when we first applied for the student visa.  I think they just do random verifications when documents do not seem to be in order.

Hi, per my experience, online is easier.  Not that it gets processed faster but it's easier and you do not have to spend for courier/secure delivery of your documents to CIC.

Hi , Thanks for your response. If we apply online do we need to upload all the transcripts?

Thanks,

Hi, letter of registration with includes statement that you are in good standing should suffice.  Read the instructions and the checklist very well.  I hardly remember it from the top of my head anymore.

You are welcome.

Much depends on the time of year at which you apply for an extension, it can range from 30 days to well over 120.  Experience tells me if I have a student whose permit expires at Xmas time I should make sure I get the request for extension in at least 3 months a head of time due to Xmas backlog.  A student whose permit expires in May or June expect a back log of at least 70+ days.

Xmas and spring are the usual times an International permit or TRV will expire because those are school start dates ie:  January start dates for new semester and semester finish dates end of May early June.

Thanks,

Hi, if you still have not yet done it, you should consider online renewal.  I called CIC for my own extension and they told me that online renewals only take "1 day" per the CIC website.  I checked the website and it did say "1 day".  You and I know it's not going to happen in a day but it should take a lot less than the time for processing paper applications.

Yes, it will be easy.  Just read all instructions carefully.  It's worth doing it online because it only takes them a few days to finish your renewal per Proceesing Times info on www.cic.gc.ca.

You will have to upload all passport page, transcripts, etc. online.  You will find all steps with instructions as you go along.  All instructions will be self-explanatory per  my experience.

Good luck.
