Hi svs,
For you to maintain legal stay in Canada, you should apply for "Extension of stay" and change of status at least 1 month before your PG work permit expires.
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/extend-student.aspYou have to provide enough documentation to prove that you will be able to support yourself and your family financially ($10,000 CAD/yr) and other reasons. You may inform them that you have a PR application in process....dont forget to include evidence; or are enrolled in some courses. If you have children, you could mention that you want your children to complete the next academic year. Generally VO gives 6 months extension but you may get for a year (you have to indicate for how long you want the extension for).
The current paper processing time is 5 months but you need not worry because the interim time period that you would stay in Canada is called "Implied status" and is legal stay. You will either get a letter with extension granted or denied. If it is denied then you will have to leave Canada within a month.
If you do not apply before the expiry of Valid PG WP then you have 90 days to restore your situation to legal status. This should be avoided in all circumstances.
