You'll have it back in a couple hours!  We went last Thursday, be there early. They line you up at 730 and sign you in.   We went to Tim Hortons and then waited at the bottom of the escalator although a couple of people waited at the desk upstairs.  Might be better to do that.  They give you a little sticker to put on your jacket and you go up the elevator.  I was 5th in line.  They take your passport, pics and tell you to sit down.

Then you wait...at about 10 after 9 they called us up gave us his passport, COPR.  That's it!!!

It shouldn't be a problem to bring the backpack since when I was there, people were carrying evidence for interviews and mothers had strollers and diaper bags. They might want to search it, and he will have to handover any cell phones or recording devices on the way into the office.

It is also highly unlikely that he will not get the passport back that day according to the website, but I haven't heard anyone in this forum say they had this problem.
