I was wondering what happened to all the physicians from other countries that come to canada and settle down . Did they go through all the exams and were able to secure a place and start residency or ended up doing odd job?
It will be nice to hear how all the fellow doctors are doing or planning to do. It will help all the future doctors immensely . Thanks.

I'm a family physician in Alberta (I'm Canadian though) I've worked with many foreign doctors over the years - it really depends where you've done your training as to whether you can practice in Canada or not and whether the College will require an internship, further training or exams.

I interned with a physician from Vietnam - both he and his wife were doctors but had to do their internship over again in Canada. They ended up practicing in Edmonton. Also I've worked with 2 doctors from South Africa, they worked in rural Saskatchewan for a couple of years before moving to Edmonton.

Hi Kaycee1, how long is the internship? Does it apply to doctor's trained from India with 20 years of experience? My brother would love to migrate to Canada and work here as a doctor.

Here are a couple of websites that have more information re: licensing in Alberta. You'd have to check with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in other provinces to find out about their standards. I'm pretty sure that a graduate from India would almost certainly have to do some sort of evaluation before being allowed to practice.

http://www.cpsa.ab.ca/Services/Registration_Department/IMGs.aspx

http://www.cpsa.ab.ca/Services/Registration_Department/OATS.aspx - this on has a flow chart showing the requirements for a medical license in Alberta

He would most likely have to write the LMCC exams - our general Canadian licensing exams that we all write.
