Once I arrive in Canada with immigrant visa, how long must I stay--I know the general requirement within 5 years, but if i need to return to the US to settle business, how long do I need to initially remain in Canada?  I'd like to be able to close out affairs in a proper way in the US, and not do it long distance by mail.

15 minutes or so, or the time it takes to "land"

No, not true.  As long as you meet the 2/5 years minimum in Canada, you'll continue to keep PR status.
