If you get a landline, you do not have to get the overseas package from the same company. You can ask for a landline with no overseas package but take that from another company that is cheaper.  I had a good experience with telehop: http://www.telehop.ca/  You can even get your landline from them if you live in certain areas.

Which company is pioneer in VoIP? I never heard about telehop. I will try if I get the PR.
Telus, Rogers are all blood suckers. I think Bell Canada is cheaper.

For a landline, you often don't have much choice.  The old companies that used to have monopoly on landline like Bell in some areas or Telus in others do not have very good overseas packages compared to many smaller companies like Telehop.  They do however offer a basic landline for a basic fee with unlimited local calling.  If you would rather go with phone through internet like vonage, you can do that.  It depends on the country you call the most if you save money or not.  I looked into it and found that it would not be cheaper for me compared to having a Telus landline and Telehop for overseas calls.

With a landline through internet, you also have to take into account that when your internet is down, your phone is down but if you have a cell phone, that is probably ok for you.  Your internet should not be down that much.  Beware of making a long contract with your internet provider.  Some will offer you a free gift if you make a 1-2-3 year contract with them but if the service is bad, it can be hard to get out of the contract.

For cell phone, I had a Bell cell phone and it was a bad deal for me.  It all depends on your usage.  You have to pick the company with the best plan for your personal use.

3.   Free unlimited calls to 80 countries of the world
4.   Speed is fantastic even when 3-4 connections are running at home
5.   video phone
6.   My TV is also hooked up with net.

What I pay:
$ 78 per month

CELLPHONE:
1.  1st I had wind for one year, used to pay $30

Both are unlimited incoming and outgoing.
