Am a bit apprehensive staying for good in Canada..how many months can we be out of Canada? I know this will delay our citizenship. Can this arrangement  effect our PR status? Up to how long can you be in a PR status?

You have to spend 2 years out of 5 years.Calculate from the day you land in Canada.

No, you have to stay 3 of 6 years in Canada. There is an online calculator at www.cic.gc.ca

To maintain your PR status you must remain in Canada for 2 years in every 5 year period.  See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/manuals-guides/english/enf/enf23e.pdf  page 12
