Hello ppl, I an AINP nominee, did my meds on Nov 12. I have heard that your passport has to be valid for atleast 6 months when you send that to Buffalo for visa/PPR. Is that true? Any experiences?

Yes, it is a common requirement for all embassies for stamping visa. Not only for Canada.

In our ppr, our visa validity is up to oct 7, 2012, our passport's validity is up to feb 21,2013. We already mailed our passports yesterday dec 8. Our target date of leaving is march. Is our passport still valid?

When any one submit his/her passport for visa, the validity of the passport should be at least for a period of 6 (months). That is minimum requirement. An extended validity above six months are always good.
You said your passport is valid up to February 2013. Your visa will only be valid up to 7 Oct 2012 because you did your medial in October 2011. Am I wright?
Therefore, you have to land in Canada before 07 October 2012 even though your passport is valid till 2013 Feb.
Hope you are clear now.

okay thanks so much wilson for clearing things up. i copied a part of the email sent to us for ur reference regarding my query on pasport validity. because i just got confussed on this part.... anyway, we just hope no problems may arise as far as passport validity is concern. again, thanks so much. God bless NOTE : Your visa(s) will be valid for your initial entry to Canada until 10/07/2012 . Please ensure that the validity of your passport(s) is at least six (6) months beyond this validity date (note that any passport received with a shorter validity than the date shown above will result in a reduced validity for entry to Canada for all members of your family, if any). You must submit your passport(s) within 45 days of the date of this letter or your application may be refused for non-compliance according to Subsection 16(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Please note that no further requests will be sent to you.

Hi chiechegelo, you are most welcome. You will not be having any problem. Your visa is already there and you have enough time. Take care.

So it means we can still get a visa even if our passport is only valid for less than 6 months but the visa will be valid for as long as the passport is valid. Yes. Better you get your passport renewed as soon as possible.

Hi The passport must have at least 6 months validity when it is submitted for visa. The validity of the visa will be ONE year from the date of medical or expiry date of the passport which ever comes early.

Posted by asmi (52) 18 Apr 2011 This is what's written in my passport request email: "Passports must be valid for at least the next 6 months, or at least until the date of your intended travel to Canada." Look for the second part. (reply) (report this) I don't like this post I like this post

Hey i am in same siruation my PP is going to expire next year. I contacted my home country consulate, same rule PP can be renewed only up to 6 months before the date of expire. But there are some examption in certain situations. Call center employeee told me that if you can prove the reason to renew your PP before 6 months then it can be renewed. I am going to send my PP in a couple of days to Indian consulate along with proof of my permanent residency file, print out from Ny web site where it says your PP should be valid for min 1 year from the date of medical. I will advise you to contact your country's consulate, explain the whole matter to them. I think you would be able to renew it now. if i was u i'll wait till I'm 7-8 months from expiry date to do it. Actually, visa should go into a passport if 1. PP is valid for a min of 6mths from medical exam or 2. is valid for 6mths from intended entry date. Now, the debate is that some ppl received PPR saying passport must be valid for 1 yr too when others did not. Also, some ppl received visa into a PP whose validity was less than 6mths and some even landed without meeting those requirements. It is true however that some nationals do not need to meet the 6mths criteria to receive a visa and cross the border.
So, where to draw the line between the practices that go from one Visa Office to another, if there's one I believe best is to wait and/or ask them. (reply) (report this) I don't like this post I like this post Posted by yafayu (54) 06 May 2011 to 2772077:
my friend who has a US visa took my passport to Buffalo to get the visa for me, the lady over there didn't ask anything and it's was easy and smooth, i don't know why many saying the passport has to be 1 year validity? If you don't have a 1 year validity passport you will get the visa until whenever your passport expire. Yes, I agree. Important thing to note is the passport should be valid for 1 year from the time you did you medical. It is like that as the medicals are only valid for 1 year. Secondaly, if you pp is expiring within 6 months and then they do PPR, they will just give you the VISA till the expiry date and say to ensure you land in canada before it expires. Else the VISA will go NULL and you will have to reapply.
So, It does not matter if you pp is valid for 1 day or 6 months, as long as you land in Canada in that time frame is what is important. PPl who already live in Canada, as this CEC, it willl be the case for the majority landing within 1 week time frame is very possible and can be done. So no need to worry abt it As long as youget your PPR before your pp expires you will be safe.
Thats my understanding and comments are more then welcome.

thanks prohatgi and yagaru for those comments. I agree with you too and think anyone facing such issue should contact his visa office when s/he reaches ppr stage. Explain his situation and see what they say. But as for me i would not try to renew pp till it's 3-4 months valid because I know my pp would be accepted for travel between US and Canada even after it expired. it however takes time to get one
