My wifes expire date on her passport is November 20 ? 2012. Should she get it renewed before we send in the application. I heard you need atleast 6 months remaining on your passport to be able to fly to another country  Is this true ?

Hi sjp, Most of the countries allow to renew passport within a year of its expiry date. Therefore, check with your passport office or agents, and if possible do it at the earliest. More validity date of passport is always very safe.

For me I will renew my passport now if I have the same passport validity period same as your wife. By the time the application process is about to finalized my passport will have short validiity period. Though you can choose to submit the PR application first before your wife renew the passport and just inform CIC the details  of your wife renewed passport while your application is in process coz passport renewal from outside your own country takes nore than a month (depends by country) which can delay your application submission.

yeah that's true; if the passport is not valid for more than 6 months u cannot really do much with it Roll Eyes u can't apply for visit visas, etc now depends on u if u want to renew before submission or after and depends on which vo u'r going through; if it's a fast vo (6 months) u can first renew and then send if it's slow vo i would just submit as soon as possible and then renew and update them the new passport details; depending on the country and type of passport maybe u'll just get a new expiry date (u r extending the current passport) while the passport number stays the same so not much for the vo to modify in ur file
