partner sponsorship

I have been living with my canadian partner, in Canada, for over 12 months. During that period I have been returning to the UK every 5 to 6 months to visit family, consequently each time I return I get another stamp allowing me to stay for 6 months. I am planning to apply for PR within the next few weeks....as my current 6 months stay is almost up, should I apply for an extension or return to the UK, (which I was hoping to do) and hope to get another 6 months when I come back.
