Pakistani-Canadians: Falling below the poverty line

Pakistan-born immigrants are the new face of poverty in urban Canada. The Canadian census revealed that 44 per cent of Pakistan-born immigrants fell below the poverty line making them the second most poverty prone group of immigrants in Canada.

While they may project an aura of opulence during their visits back home, their life in Canada, however, is often full of struggle and frustration. Thousands of Pakistani trained engineers, doctors, and PhDs are driving taxis or are working as security guards in large cities. In fact, one in three taxi-drivers in Canada was born in either India or Pakistan. Several others are unemployed thus becoming a burden on Canadian taxpayers.

The latest Census data for income for 2005 revealed that Pakistan-born immigrants reported the second highest incidence for the low-income cut-off, a proxy for poverty line in Canada. In comparison, only 18 per cent of  India-born immigrants in Canada reported being a low-income person or belonging to a low-income economic family. Immigrants born in the United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy and Germany reported the lowest incidence of poverty in Canada.

I applied under FSW (NOC 1111 – chartered accountants) in Oct 2009, got acknowledgement receipt in Dec 2009 and submitted all documents in Apr 2010 (but sent the IELTS original results many months later). I heard nothing for next 2 yrs until last month when I got a letter from regional office (where my application went) asking for Medical (good news I suppose) and bunch of other things such as updated new generic application form, updated bank letter/ statements, current employer letter and updated Police Certs. They didn't ask for IELTS so I'm assuming my IELTS was accepted even though I sent it many months later.

Now since they asked for updated Police clearance (I sent Police Certs in Apr 2010 along with all other docs) so I'm thinking that my Security clearance is outstanding. Other friends who applied in the same period (and in the same FSW category) as me were not asked for Police Certs again, they were asked just for Medical and updated generic application form and one Pakistani female friend was even asked to pay the Right for Permanent Residency Fee (RPRF). Does that mean that my process will longer?

The doctor sent my Medical results last week and I sent all documents yesterday. Can anyone advice on HOW LONG it should take to CIC to approve my Medical and review my Police Certs etc? (I have no medical or security issues so should be straight forward?). I'm thinking upto 3 months before they ask for RFPR fee and then 2 more months till I get my visa. Do you agree?

Dear Friends:
Pl. also consider the dreadful state of affairs in our country, just as I am typing this reply I am listening to news in the background that says 11 people killed, victims of target killing. How do you think the energy crisis would be tackled by our so called govt. Already we witness riots due to energy crisis. Dacoity / snatching / kidnapping / corruption etc. etc. etc. are rampant. The only solution I see is a revolution / God for bid, a major calamity that open our eyes and make us realise what we have lost.  Atleast we have a window open to try our luck. It is better and worth trying to offer our children a better place, environment and people to live their lives in peace and harmony. So what if some one has to work as a security guard or drive a taxi. I know lot of office going boys who ride a rickshaw in the evening to make their ends meet. Yesterday, I met a security guard at expo centre, Karachi who makes candles in the evening to make his ends meet. So, i believe we can't win it all, we have to prepare ourselves for the worst case scenario and be prepared to do whatever in our means to achieve long term objective.
