Hi All, I wanted to ask you for your thoughts on whether or not Dependents can get Citizenship after completing required period of stay in Canada even if the Principal applicant leaves right after landing?. Is he required to stay with the family to apply for Citizenship. Please share.. Thanks.

After completing the landing formalities principal applicant as well as dependants are on same footing. Anyone who completes 3 years can apply for citizenship.

Hi friend,

Though I have not much more idea, I can share you the link where they are describing in following ways:

Age

You must be at least 18 years old to apply for Canadian citizenship.

To apply for citizenship for a child under 18, make sure the following conditions are met:

the person applying is the child's parent, adoptive parent or legal guardian
the child is a permanent resident, but does not need to have lived in Canada for three years; and
one parent is already a Canadian citizen or is applying to become a citizen at the same time. This also applies to adoptive parents.

Permanent resident status

To become a Canadian citizen, you must have permanent resident status in Canada, and that status must not be in doubt. This means you must not be the subject of an immigration investigation, an immigration inquiry or a removal order (an order from Canadian officials to leave Canada).

Time lived in Canada

To become Canadian citizens, adults must have lived in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) in the past four years before applying. Children under the age of 18 do not need to meet this requirement.

You may be able to count time you spent in Canada before you became a permanent resident if that time falls within the four-year period.

Link is here:

I feel there will not be any problem if your dependents fulfill the criteria.

The foregoing replies r correct...
After 'landing' there r no more 'dependant's' or 'PA'. U qualify on ur indiv merits.

Lets say kids stay in canada with grandparents and 3 years passed. But none of his parents are eligible enough to be citizen. Can children apply for citizenship.

Thank you all for very helpful information.

I am trying to apply this information in my situtation and find out what could be best scenario. Here are my details. Please give your thoughts:

I have a small Consulting business in New York and have lived here with my wife and children ages 14, 13 and 12 for over 12 years. We are not permanent residents
We have steady income and are happy with everything we got except that we dont have permanent residence status and probably will not get it. (Which sucks) We have got Canadian Immigarion approval and could get Visa's in six months.

Situation is that i cannot leave my business but can let my wife and kids move to Canada to get settled there for good. I can land with my family first time to fulful the requirements but have to return back to U.S. In this situation, according to your comments and cited references, my wife can apply for citicenship for herself and children after required residency time period is met, Am i right?

I also understood that children under 18 does not have to comply with physical presence requirements. In another scenario, if my wife goes to Canada herself and completes her residence requirements alone and apply for citizenship for herself and three children living in U.S, would that go through. Children will be less than 18 years of age when she applies for Citizenship. The reason why children would not go to Canada is that we are happy with the schools/programs they are in right now. It is best for them to coninue under the system they are in from Grade 1.

Please give your thoughts ideas. Finances are not an issue. (At least for now)

Thanks.

In my point of view, its okay. However, a bit confused about children's physical presence matter. Not necessary to be there for 3 years but wonder if there is minimum requirement. Waiting to hear from Captain Qorax.

Thanks Deba. Qorax, Can you give your thoughts.
To my mind, it won't create any problem since your plan is alright as per the requirements from PR and citizenship criteria for children under 18. Once you and/or your spouse meets the criteria, no issues at all. However, I apologise I cannot say confidently as I have not much more idea about this issue and looking forward to hearing from Captain. Thank you. My best wishes for you and your family.
