Can you define "on-line" bank? Do you mean a bank that allows you to transact (pay bills, transfer money, buy/sell stocks) online? If so, all the big five do (i.e. TD, Scotia, etc.).

Yes that's exactly what I mean, thanks a lot. As you will see we are still in the early stages of immigration My wife and I do 99% of our banking on line here in UK. And we will need to set up similar in Canada in advance of the house move if possible. (to Halifax NS) Would you/could you recommend any of the big 5?

I like TD (Toronto Dominion) or Scotia (Bank of Nova Scotia) personally.
However you're probably good with any of the big five. All are national banks and have branches located across the country.

We have set up an HSBC Advance account. We already bank with them here so it means that we can keep this account open and transfer money between the 2. It was really easy to do as well, but I don't know how easy it is if you don't bank with them

Yep, we are going on the 17th!! I can't believe we are finally going! We decided to go when I was pregnant with our little boys, and they're nearly 3 now so the wait has been unbearable but now I haven't got enough hours in the day to get everything done! We've just had a couple of fabulous weekends on the beach (we live near Brighton) so we're leaving at a good time....we just have to say goodbye to everyone now - NOT looking forward to that!

The process seems to take forever, but when the visa finally arrived it feels like time has flown by! Good luck with your application, hope it is processed quickly. I'm sure we'll speak again at some point soon xx

Hiya, my partner and I have just submitted our application, I'm sponsoring him and we'll be living in Halifax, planning to be there earlier part of 2012. Have you given any thought on how (or if) you'll be shipping your belongings there? Sounds like you'll be going around the same time as us, wondering if you might be interested in sharing a container?

Hi
There's a coincidence. We should definitely talk. My wife is Canadian and is sponsoring me..AND we are moving to Halifax also !
We would be happy to talk about the whole thing and yes even a possible sharing arrangement.
You might want to look at my other thread on here entitled "Impossible question" and see if it rings any bells with you?
If you wish we could exchange email addresses too
Thanks for your message

As for banking, I found "PC Financial" to have the cheapest options. They are a low cost brand of CIBC. Other banks tried to tell me that PC Financial does not offer special services like TFSA and RRSP or free cheques. In fact, PC Financial offers all of that for free. Of course, there are services PC Financial does not offer (like safes) and in the beginning your daily cash withdrawal might be limited, but overall this offer is saving me a lot of money.
I think I had an e-mail from the recently - if I bring new customers, both of us will get a little money for that. So if anyone is interested... But I'd have to check the details.
