There is no other stream and the timelines are bound to get longer as they decrease the amount of visas for parents/grandparents.

Not unless they sponsor themselves to Canada which doesn't seem too likely to happen.
As kelKel stated, they are decreasing the visas for parent/grandparent sponsorship.

Far from it, there have been comments in the Canadian press that the times will increase to over ten years.

just hope that CIC don't change to the Australian system - the Australians only issue 1000 visas for that class a year - estimated time at present over 20 years.

If you can find someone to go through the exercise of hiring them to be contributing members of Canadian society (i.e. employed), then sure!
