Nurse from the uk

Hi there, im new!
Me and my wife want to emigrate to canada from the UK, she is a recently qualified Nurse with 1 years work experience and i guess our best hope of getting over.  
Ive had a hard time finiding information about how to proceed, i know a friend who is going over in about 5 weeks after getting a job over there (in games), so is that the quickest way ? to find employment ?

can anyone give me some links to usefull information as i just cant find anything i can understand!

Hi Jimmy,

It appears that at the very least, CIC require 2 years work experience in your chosen profession.  I am not sure what this would be for medicine and care but I would suspect the same.  In terms of processing, you should expect at least a 2-3 year wait before your application is completed.

When a family intend to immigrate to Canada, all memebers of the faily are assesed as part of the main applicants case.  Points on your background, education, skills, health etc will be counted and used to determine whether your family could make a positive impact in Canada or whether you would be a drain on resources such as medical care, unemployment etc.

If I were you I would contact an immigration consultant as soon as possible and discuss your case with them.  They will very quickly be able to tell you whether or not your family would qualify.

Thanks for the advice, I spoke to my friend who has a 3 year work permit, i think his process from start to finish will be about 3 months (offered job to starting in canada).
I work in the same field myself and i guess shouldnt find too much trouble in getting a job over there..
but, how is that different to a visa ? i mean, If i got a job and got a work permit is my wife automatically granted a work permit ? or ? I understand she might have to do some training / exam to actually be a nurse in canada.

If i got a work permit and we went over, is it then possible to get citizenship (i was told after 2 years working there it was possible)  ?  
I really dont want to wait a couple of years to go to canada, ive waited long enough in this manky country! get me out! help!  :D

:) Well, first you have no choice but go through the waiting process like everyone else, but if you got a job offer or your friend could propose you to his employer, it may help.

As for your wife, she will have to go through more training to be up to canada standards but probably would be allowed to work in the medical field as nurse assistant until she is up to par.

Your wife would have to apply for a work permit same as you.  If I am correct your friend has a limited work permit..3 yrs, which means he is a temporary worker not a permanent resident. I would apply for PR and wait the process, if you qualify then it is worth the wait as you will be permant and it takes 3 yrs to become a citizen but I did hear a rumor that it is now 2 but I would have to verify it.

Don't quote me but I believe you are confusing a work permit with a Permanent Residency visa.  If your friend wanted to remain in Canada after his work visa expired, he would have to apply for Permanent Residency.  In which case his application would take as long as anyone else's.  ie. several years.  Only after becoming a PR could he then become eligigle to apply for citizenship.  That is afer 3 years of Permanent Residency.

The tricky part is if he is on say a 3 year contract with his employer and they do not chose to offer to renew his contract, at the end of the 3 years unless he found another employer to sponsor him for a work permit, he would have no basis on which to stay legally in the country.  That would put him back in the UK.

:D True that he would have to return, but in the meantime he could still try and apply if he wishes. It would not take that long because he would have worked in Canada already and if he got another employer without being sponsored he could still be accepted rapidly enough as he had already been thoroughly checked out.

If he got sponsored by the employer, it takes no time at all to leave. Papers are rapidly processed and it takes very little time to have everything as the employer probably proved that no canadian could do his job.
