Can someone clarify the requirements for getting your documents (marriage certs, birth certs etc) notarised. Ive never even heard of a notary before starting this process. We have rang around some solicitors and finally got one who said he could do what we where asking. However Ive been there today with my wife and was done in 20 minutes and paid £20 only, Ive read in other posts other people have paid upwards of £80. He has photocopied each document and then stamped each sheet with the solicitors stamp, then dated and signed it saying that he was a solicitor.

   Is this okay ?

All solicitors in England are not notary public.
Google Notaries in England and then find one in your area.
Cost vary & depends on per document or per hour charge.
