Social work is one niche area which is meant for those who tend to feel a responsibility towards the society. A social worker is someone who helps people, families, communities as well as organizations to develop and enhance the resources and the skills required for social functioning, counsel and refer to other services for support. As Canada is one of the developed nations of the world, social workers would be helpful in the further development of its community. Thus, this occupation is present in Canada's new list of 29 occupations for immigration under federal skilled worker program to Canada. The applicants under this occupation could be working in NGO's, multinational and transnational organizations and areas related to corporate social responsibility and program management.

Qualifying Criteria for Employment

1.An applicant must have at least a Bachelor's or master's degree in Social Work from a recognized university.
2.An applicant for Immigration under this category must have experience of at least one year as a social worker or related field that required qualifications in social work, NGO's, research, program management or corporate social responsibility,
3.Overall, a person must have experience of around 2-4 years; actual number of years of experience to apply under this occupation is dependent on many factors such as whether the applicant is married and his English language skills.
Duties & Responsibilities

A social worker in Canada is expected to perform some or all of the duties mentioned below:

•Offer counseling and therapy to nurture skills to help deal and resolve the personal problems of the concerned people.
•Interviewing people in person, with family or in groups to analyze and review the circumstances and difficulties, based on which decide on the kind of service to be needed.
•Program designing for the client assistance which also involves agency referrals which aid finances, help with legal aspects, medical treatment and so on.
•Taking authorized action for the protection of child in cases of abuse. The social worker is also expected to investigate such cases.
•Lobbying for solutions, council for clients in the community in cases where the problems are having an immediate effect on the concerned group. More so, the professional is expected to come about with programs for prevention and intervention.
•They also have the option of specialization in a particular field such as gerontology, child welfare, and family services and so on.
However, the above were some of the many responsibilities that a social worker is expected to perform.

I wud  like to mention that how about people who have experience in the social work but does not have a post graduate degree in this field. I am from pakistan and I worked with a very well known NGO as a Social worker for 6 months and than as a social worker supervisor for another 12 months.

I worked as a social worker back in 2006 when a deadly earthquake hit my country and alot of people were required in the effected areas to help the survivors.

The only thing that i seem not to have in this category is the degree because my English is professional level and I am also currently studying to get a diploma in french.

I have around one and half year experience in Social Work. Have family in Canada aswell. please help and give me good news

A BSW is a minimum requirement to work as a social worker.  Any chance you can come to study in Canada and get your BSW here?  That would make things a lot easier for you...

Does anyone know if, in order to apply for immigration, once actually needs to have a B.A. in Social Work?  Or is it a matter of doing social work type activities in your job?  I have experience working at a charity which helps disadvantaged immigrants adapt to the local society, but my BA is in Sociology, not Social Work.

Anyone have any idea if this would be accepted as 4152 experience?

In Canada - well, in Ontario, and likely the rest of Canada - Social Work is a regulated health profession, like nurses etc.

The kinds of positions you two mention have a different NOC - 4164

If you look on the full list of job titles for the NOC, you will see things like "immigration settlement practitioner."

It is very unlikely that your experience will be accepted as "social work."
