Hello ASG,
Wildlife biology rocks!
When I lodged my PR application last year I was also wondering whether PhD research counts as work experience. I had done some temporary work during my MSc studies, and then 1 year of PhD research (full time, on a scholarship, in wildlife biology). In my PR application I outlined my PhD research as my main component for work experience. So far it has all gone well, and I have just sent in my medical results.
How the job prospects for wildlife biologists in Canada (in particular in regards to employment in NGOs and government)? And are there any other wildlife biologists or ecologists in this forum?
All the best,
Hello UP123,
what you say make me feel much, much better. From what I gathered here, it's really on a case by case basis and how well I convince the officer that full time PhD is equal to work experience.
As for the job prospects, well, it seems that environment is the hardest field to get in these days, even for Canadians. I know of positions in the government that have about 500 applicants...However, I still want to try, simply because, as you said, wildlife biology rocks.
I'll take my chances and hopefully land a job out West after I graduate. I think that the best option is to know people in the field. Networking always helps.
