There is a new pilot project for obtaining a police certificate for Immigration Visa purposes - Canada being one of the countries it applies to. 

It costs £35 for the standard 10 day service but you can pay £70 and get the results in 3 days!  http://www.acpo.police.uk/certificates.asp
