I have just been given a holiday working visa, which I plan to use from December 26, 2011 to December 2012.  Before I planned this trip I'd already booked a short holiday also to Canada this July 2011.

Can anyone tell me if this short trip will in any way affect the validity of the holiday working visa during 2012?

No, just don't present the LOI when you enter as a visitor, when asked, state that you are going to use it in December.
