Hi everyone,

My hubby would like our Point of Entry to be in Edmonton as that is where he is based.  We've been checking flights but seems we could not chance upon any that lands first in edmonton from the philippines.  Anyone who landed in Canada thru Edmonton? could you please share your flight details?

I believe you can only enter through either Vancouver or Ontario airport as your point of entry and get a connecting flight from there to Edmonton. Edmonton is a local airport only and not intended for international flights.

I am not really sure about this so we'll have to wait what others would have to say about this.

Edmonton will not have international flights at the moment because of the weather, I believe they start again end of April, that's why we are waiting until 17th May to land, we didn't want to fly to Calgary and then travel to Edmonton because we have 2 little boys who wouldn't appreciate the extra journey!!

There are plenty "international" flights to Edmonton from US.

Edmonton is a small airport but you can find a lot more flights into Calgary.  Try that.  You can transfer to another plane and in an hour, you are in Edmonton.

I think it's pretty unlikely.  In a quick look at airline schedules on kayak.com, MNL to YEG has you stopping in either SFO (where you would likely need to get a US transit visa) to connect or in YVR (where you would clear Canadian customs and land).

There is no reason for air carriers to go direct from MNL to YEG -- fuel consumption would be high and they're better off gathering everyone at a hub like SFO, LAX or YVR before the cross-oceanic journey.

Actually, Edmonton is an international airport, like many others.  Even Prince George, BC (city of 80,000) has an international airport and does flights direct to Mexico.  You would be able to use YVR, YEG, YYC, YYZ, YUL, YOW, among others as your point of entry.  You will, however, have to get a flight that goes from another country directly there -- you'll find that YYZ and YVR are the common ones for that, especially when coming from overseas.

Baloney.  They may not have the international flight YOU want, but it has nothing to do with the weather.  If the airlines could fill the planes on the route you want, they'd schedule it.  Often, there are more "urgent" concerns like sun destinations in the Caribbean, Hawaii or Mexico.

I don't think I'd call Edmonton's airport "small", but it certainly isn't the direct landing spot of most international flights.  In this age of high fuel costs, the airlines are making more frequent stops to exchange passengers.

Your best bet would be to understand that your point of entry has no bearing on the card or status you receive.  Just fly through YVR and catch a connecting flight.

No Doctorkb, not baloney.  I answered the post with the information I have. I was unable to fly direct to Edmonton in November, and cannot get a flight there until the end of April so my response was correct. My parents are flying out at Christmas and cannot go direct to Edmonton, they are flying to Calgary and getting a transfer.....just like I did 2 years ago and my sister did when she returned from her visit to the UK last year.
You could have just written the info you have instead of making us look stupid !

I'd just like to point out that just because there is no international flight from the city where you live into Edmonton, that doesn't necessarly mean that there are no international flights into Edmonton from some other cities.

If you look stupid, it's because you opened your mouth without thinking.

What you have described has nothing to do with the weather: only business.  If you were flying from Maui, you could get a direct flight to Edmonton ONLY in the months you mentioned.

The bottom line is that unless the airlines can fill the seats, they'd be wasting gas by not having a transfer done in either YVR or YYC, when traveling from the Philippines.

There are direct flights several times a week from Edmonton to London.  I've flown on them on numerous occasions. And there are also multiple daily flights from several US locations including Minneapolis,Chicago, Denver, Phoenix, etc. etc. Don't make it sound like our airport closes down during the winter because that just isn't true! Yes, Calgary is a bigger airport, and you will have more choice flying into Calgary or Vancouver, but the flights from either of those airports to Edmonton run a few times pretty much every hour, and its not a big deal to finish your flight on to Edmonton from one of them!

I'm not getting into arguements about this, Edmonton is also my airport, I am from Edmonton.
My original response was to the best of my knowledge, clearly my experience of flying from London is wrong. I was trying to tell the OP that we had experienced the same difficulty in getting direct flights at this time of year, I didn't realise it was going to cause so much trouble.
