This has nothing to do with immigration or Canada – except that I bought my laptop in Canada.

I use Windows 7.  My problem is that sometimes I inadvertently press the wrong keys (don't know which ones) and suddenly instead of getting a letter, I'll get a capital E with accent over it. Or instead of getting a question mark I'll get somethng else (I forget what, for he moment).

This happens in WORD and in emails.

To correct the problem I must exit and re-enter the program.

Has anyone solved this problem?

No problem with the desktop I bought in China.  Does the laptop have warranty?  Why don't you phone the manufacturer or reseller for info?

Hi

You have held down a key combination too long or hit alt 0200

Hmmm ... maybe the former, but never the latter.

I'll try to keep my fingers moving more quickly in future.

But once I have made the error, is there a way to reverse it rather than exiting the program?  Or maybe by keying alt 0200 again?

It sounds like you are using a french keyboard.  Check your taskbar (bottom right) for the keyboard symbol and check USA.  That should get you going.  I know when you first buy your laptop, it asks which keyboard you want to use and indicates this cannot be unchanged, however, not sure if it can be changed with a re-installation of your OS.

Problem solved.  Was talking and typing on SKYPE with an American computer guy.  Suddenly the problem surfaced again, and he and I did some experimentation. Turns out that I had set my language to  "Canadian English" [wanting a bit of culture, you know  :-)  ], and that apparently creates the problem.  Revert to US English keyboard and voila, the problem disappears.

Now, this raises a new question, about why Windows 7 behaves that way, forcing the world of Windows users to adopt US English (surely an oxymoron?), but let that pass for now.

And to the American readers, JUST KIDDING!!
