Hi

When I called CIC to ask about national id document, they said I can use the Canadian drivers license if I dont posess any ID from my country of origin. I wrote my driver's license number on the form and a attached a copy of it.

You got the wrong answer, as I said before, if you country doesn't issue NICs, then you select No.

ioanag got some BAD INFO.  Listen to PMM.

Either your country of citizenship has a national identity card, or it doesn't.   You would probably know by now if it does.  It is NOT A PROBLEM if it does not.  For example, USA doesn't have one.

They could have given me the wrong info,  Embarrassed... but I expalined to them on the phone that I left my country before the age of 18 and my Romanian ID card expired long ago. When I asked if driver's license is considered a National ID they said Yes. And when I asked if I can use my Canadian DL she said Yes. I told them I am a temporary resident.... I don't know if that's right or wrong... but that's what I used....

USA have national ID's. I lived there before I came to Canada, and I had an ID issued by the state of California...

GOOD LUCK!

Here's what the guide says:

National Identity Document
Question 1Check the appropriate box to indicate if you have a valid identity document.

Question 2If you checked "Yes", provide your identity document number. Make sure there is no space between each number or letter.

Question 3From the list, select the name of the country that issued your identity document.

Question 4Enter the issue date of your identity document.

Question 5Enter the expiry date of your identity document.

There is no indication that it must be from your home country. So I would use the one from your home country if you have it and it is still valid, otherwise your provincial ID card or driver's license number should be fine as well. Be sure to include copies of both sides of the card in your application.

USA have national ID's. I lived there before I came to Canada, and I had an ID issued by the state of California...

The USA does NOT have a National ID.  A driver's license is not a national identity document. It is issued by a state, not the federal government.  It can be used for identification purposes in the USA, but that is not the same thing as a national identity document.   Nor is a passport considered a national identity document in the USA.

I agree that the instructions do not make it clear what they are asking for.  Or rather, it is only clear to applicants who actually have a national identity card.
