Can anyone help with the following question??

Background: many many years ago, while an irresponsible college student I eloped with a Canadian girl while vacationing in her home town in Canada (the culmination of a grueling long-distance relationship borne of a summer spent backpacking around Europe). The relationship quickly fell apart although we parted as friends, I returned to the US, where she sent after me some simple divorce-type paperwork to sign, which I did and eventually sent back. No fuss, no muss. With the passing of time (this was in the early 90s) I had learned to treat the episode as a boyfriend - girlfirend flight of fancy (all thge more as our parents never found out about it). Eventually, we lost touch and I have no idea where this girl is - no doubt married to some dude under a different name and living in the suburbs.

The dillema: In an ironic twist of fate, I am soon to be married to a girl who is a naturalised Canadian citizen and we would live to settle in Toronto. I noticed that the Canadian immigration paperwork requires, in excrutiating detail, info about any past marriages. I have no interest in lying or witholding anything from Canadian immigration authorities but the sad truth is that I have no paperwork regarding my past marriage and divorce, nor can I to be realistic hope to get any: I honestly cant remember when we got married (best I can do is approximate), where exactly, or when the divorce paperwork was signed (that i can also at best approximate). I have no idea how to track down this girl or her family either - her last name (maiden/family) is simply too common to search out!

PLEASE OFFER ANY ADVICE REGARDING THE EASIEST WAY OUT OF THIS STRANGE NAGGING PROBLEM!!!! I would love to hear it! By the way I have never been granted nor have I ever applied for any type of Canadian residency, etc...

There are ways to get marriage and divorce records, atleast I know there is here in the states. Try looking up some government place depending on where you got married. Here in the states it's the same place that you go to get a copy of your birth certificate. I just breifly looked at the Ontraio site and it mentions something called a 'final divorce certificate.' If that helps you at all.

Do you happen to remember the province where your ex wife was living when you divorced?  She would have filed the divorce papers in the Supreme Court of that province.  You can start your search by contacting either the Supreme Court in that province or the Department of Vital Statistics in that province.  All of them have websites which should help you by at least providing contact numbers you can call.  Good luck!
