Must I have a degree before working as an Accountant?

If I have been working as an Accountant because my duties are those of an Accountant, do I need to prove I received my degree before I started to work as an accountant or they do not really care about it? I got my degree in Business 8 years after I was hired as an Accountant. I think here in the US they do not require you to have a degree to work as an Accountant.
