I am considering buying a vacation home in Canada.  A multi entry visa appears to be what I will need.  Is there a maximum length of time I can stay in Canada for a given year?  For instance, If I stay in Canada for 4 months, leave for 2 months, would I be allowed to stay another 4 months in the same calendar year?  i.e., is there a maximum amount of time you can stay in the country without being a permanent resident?

Thanks

I think it's normally half and half, 6 months a year but they may not actually check.  They don't know when you leave because they only scan you coming in.  The work with the US border though so if you go through the US, they may know.

Where are you from?
