For those trying to decide where to land, this information may be of interest.  Today the BC Premier announced an increase in the Minimum Wage that will take effect on 1 May 2011 in British Columbia.

General Minimum Wage

Today                          8.00/hr

May 1/11                    $8.75

Nov 1/11                     $9.50

May 1/12                    $10.25
 

•         Workers who are subject to alternate minimum pay provisions will receive corresponding increases on a percentage basis.

•         Piece rates for hand harvesting certain crops will be adjusted as a percentage of the first phase of the general minimum wage and will be further reviewed by government.
 

Alcohol server wage for liquor servers

Today                          8.00/hr

May 1/11                    $8.50

Nov 1/11                     $8.75

May 1/12                    $9.00


Quick Facts

•         There were approximately 1.8 million paid employees in B.C. in 2009.

•         According to Statistics Canada, 2.3 per cent of B.C. paid employees earned $8/hr or less (about 41,200 workers) in 2009.

•         The average hourly wage in B.C. in February 2011 was $23.16/hr. – the third-highest hourly wage in the country, behind only Alberta ($25.65) and Ontario ($23.74). (February 2011 figures)

•         B.C.'s average hourly youth wage is $13.86 per hour – the third-highest in Canada, behind only Alberta ($15.69) and Saskatchewan ($14.79).

•         According to the 2009 B.C. Wage and Salary Survey conducted by BC Stats and Statistics Canada:

•         The most frequent wage for farm workers was $12.93/hr and the average starting wage for farm workers was $11.28/hr.

•         The most frequent wage for food and beverage servers working full time was $10.15/hr (not including tips).

•         For retail salespersons and clerks, the most frequently paid wage was $14.61/hr and the average starting wage was $12.16/hr.

Hi Fariza:  There isn't a "link" to which jobs these wages will apply.  Loosely, minimum wage would apply to entry level jobs requiring minimal education beyond high school, for example the service industries (food outlets, auto dealerships, cleaning companies, etc).  Probably many survival jobs would fall into this category.

Interesting.. but does not concern me! Never worked for minimum wage in my life!!

Majority members have had the same case, I believe though  Cool. But it doesn't mean you gonna catch same in Canada as well (at least with first job). So, BETTER TO PREPARE FOR WORSE.

I knew someone is going to make a remark about my statement.. I have lived and worked in several countries and never I got offered minimum wage. I do not see why Canada is different, I did my homework and visited the place several times. Most people on here have never been to Canada. As to harsh reality, I have been on this earth long enough to know how it works. Pride has nothing to do with it, knowledge, experience, attitude.
