Migrating to Canada

I'm a Mexican citizen living in the US with H1B about to expire, looking to migrate to Canada (Calgary or Toronto area). Are there any restrictions on asking for permanent residence on a TN-1 working visa (skilled worker)? Spouse and myself with bachelors degree in Engineering and Accounting.

What is the equivalent to H1B in Canada?

Is it possible to seek permanent residency in Canada while on TN-1? We were told that the TN-1 is the same process as in the US, it can be extended indefinetly but you are not allowed to apply for permanent residency.
