If you have to carry medicines for a medical condition (for use during the flight) then you should also bring the prescription. Everything else should be placed in your checked baggage. Remember the rules for carry on items, they do not want you carrying liquids in your carry on bags. It does not make that much sense to carry all that stuff, because can get all the medicines that you are likely to need in Canada, so why bother carrying all the extra weight. (Actually the same applies to toiletries).

Hi baloo,
so we still can't have liquids in our carry-on luggage? i'm planning on bringing some art supplies to amuse my daughter with on a 12-hour flight...are scissors, glue and paint (in tubes) not allowed too?

Hi baloo,

Very small quantities of liquids are allowed but it is a pain to deal with, so I take none. No gels, so no glue or paint - No scissors of sharp objects. What airline are you using, their Web site will list what you cannot carry on, and what is not allowed in any baggage. A list of banned items from transport Canada:
TP 14628 E - Prohibited Items Listammunition axes and hatchets billiard cues billy clubs and blackjacks bows and arrows box cutters brass knuckles carbon dioxide cartridges and other compressed gases caustic materials (including acids) chemicals or gases that are disabling dangerous goods as defined in section 2 of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, 1992 that are not being transported in accordance with Part 12 of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations darts devices for shocking firearms and parts of firearms fire extinguishers gas torches golf clubs gun lighters hockey sticks hypodermic needles ice axes and ice picks ice skates insecticides knives or knife-like objects of any length lacrosse sticks liquids, aerosols or gels - other than formula, milk, juice or food for infants- in containers that exceed 100 mL or 100 g in capacity and that do not all fit in a single clear plastic resealable bag that is sealed and does not exceed 1 L in capacitymartial arts devices oxygen tanks penetrating objects pyrotechnics razor blades replica weapons restraining devices scuba tanks ski poles sling shots and catapults sporting bats tools toy weapons including toy transformer robots that form into toy guns

Should be no problem. But they may want to see it working.

carrying it is one thing, but is it allowed to be turned on and played with? it won't cause any problem the way mobile phones do?

It can be used when the crew tell you. Typically not during takeoff and landing. Make sure it has headphones, because any noise will not make other passengers your friend.
