Medical Doctor

Am a medical doctor ( MD) from Oman, graduated from Sultan Qaboos University after 7 years of study ( 4 years got a bachelors in health scinces for it and then 3 years medical doctor degree, granted 2 separate certificates). and Total years of study is 19 years.

My question is do i get 25 education points? ( note MD is different from mbbs as far as i know) .
plz only doctors or people that are sure about it to reply as i am desperately in need for advise about this issue. Thanks

MD not as PhD and unfortunately you will not get 25 point.
My case is similar to your case, I was graduated from Sana'a University-Yemen (Near to your country), & I received 22 point for my education ,in spite of that I have Arab board in Emergency Medicine, 4 years post graduate training, in addition to 6 years university study.

I dont think this is accurate. In some countries medical graduate has mbbs which is a single under-graduate degree. I have 2 degrees ( bachelors in health sciences degree and Medical doctor degree) with 19 years of study, so i would get at least 22 points according to most of the replies i got so far here and in some other threads.

The immigration applications will usually take about one year.
But licensing will take many years if you are lucky & active.
I know many friends decided to start studying in another fields either in  health  or in other fields as a tech.
For me, I have already started licensing processes and my MCCEE will be on 20 May 2012 in Cairo.

Hi Doctor,

You have two or more university degrees at the bachelor's level and at least 15 years of full-time or full-time equivalent study. :
Therefore    22 points

I think 22 points is correct...I went to medical school in Mexico and it only counts as a bachelor's degree, eventhough it is 7 years, it is only one degree...so less points.

About certification in Canada, from my research this is what I have found:

1) Residency spots in Canada are few and hard to get. They usually go to Canadian medical graduates.
2) If you did residency in another country it doesn't count. Unless it is in the US or France (for Quebec only), it is likely your specialty won't count.

Personally, I did my residency in the US, and am currently finishing my fellowship training (also in the US). I have been in contact with an agency called healthforceonatrio (google it, they have a webpage) and they explained to me what I would need to do practice in Canada. So I don't know your particular case, but in my case my American Board certification is equivalent to the Royal College's board, but I would need to get a "limited" license, find a job that gives me "supervision" for a year, writes an evaluation for me at the end of the year, and then get an unrestricted license. I know of some people that have done it, and it was worked out.

Thanks every1 for the replies its very helpful. As far as I know, residencies ARE tough to get in Canada as u said Ana. There are some IMG spots they mostly go to Canadians that have graduated abroad. Am trying to get mine as an FMG instead through my country, which is how many gulf countries students get their spots in Canada. It mainly means that ur country sponsors ur residency in Canada, they pay you ur salary and the tution fees to Canada, Canadians train u and u provide them free service on the other hand. Will see how it works out.

You may get 22 Points...BUT you should calculate your points (Total) with your Education   @   20Points. If you are not coming up to 67 with keeping the education   @   20..even then there is no harm in applying....AS you will never know if you dont apply.

As for Canadian Residency, well that is a BIG issue for International Medical Graduates, pretty much it is said that majority will not be able to get Residencies, even with all exams cleared. SO the mind has to set that if you want to go to Canada, being a doctor, you will have to struggle a LOT.

Then there is another option to go sideways, and choose something else related to health Profession.

So what other sideway health professions are usually available for doctors and are they well paid ? Now am asking those questions as its very important to be realistic and know all possibilities as am going to be responsible for a whole family with me.
Is there any way of getting a study loan to finish masters in something for example or do i have to be canadian ?

If you are Permanent Resident, there are loans, BUT they are a serious burden, as you will be paying them back.

AS for alternate jobs, nothing special, you can work as a Physician's Assistant, if you get a Job. OR get yourself through some course like Resp. Therapist, Lab Assistant or Technologist etc etc etc. Its a personal call.

As far as I know, Doctors should be ready for a world of Pain and struggle if they are banking on going through all the exams and waiting/applying for Residency.

There is unfortunately no easy answer for Doctors
