hi baloo.. I agree with you that one should not carry inexpensive stuff.... But i wonder why does the list on this and many other posts mention these things...
may be because they are meant to survive first few days ..or something like that...when one doesnt bothers to go shopping for first few days.. This list also says bring maggi... Lol .

I understand that some people would not want to shop during their first days after a long flight. But it is normally a painless experience (apart from spending the money)
Googling the store locations before you arrive in Canada is also a good idea.
Most people in Canada know that 99% of their favourite foods from "home" are available here, yes the prices can be more expensive.
For me, the thought of bringing all that extra weight in my baggage makes no sense. There are more important things to put in my luggage.
I would suggest that the only time it makes sense to bring this stuff, is if someone is moving to a very small town, a long way from a main shopping centre.
