Background:
One of my relative is on work permit he got after an approved LMO (some software related title).  It is expiring soon and his company said they are not willing to go into the process of renewing the LMO again.

Question:
His academic background and some of the work he is currently doing with the company fits Software positions exempted for LMO.  Can he apply for the renewal of the work permit under that exempted category if the company is willing to support?

Any inputs / suggestions are highly appreciated as he is under some stress and I would like to help him if I can.

Yes he can.  You can always apply for everything, it's just a question if it's going to be approved or not. If his job description falls under LMO exempt job and his employer will give him a letter supporting that, I think he has a pretty good chance to get approved.
