London to Canada - employment history

I have had two jobs since graduating.  My first job ended on bad terms and I feel they may inform people in my new company about my application if I need a reference.

It would not be in my best interests to inform my existing employer that I plan to emigrate to Canada.

In light of the above, can I get by without any need for a reference etc from employers?
