Hi

Our live-in caregiver for elderly is due to arrive in NS on Jan 25, 2011.  Everything has been approved, ticket is purchased all papers are in order.  My question deals with the Nova Scotia Labor Laws. 

Am I correct, after reading about NS Labor Laws that our caregiver MUST receive a 24 hour break with no work after she has worked for 6 days. 

What if she was to work for example 3 days and on the fourth day work only half a day and have half a day off, then back to work for 5 days then have half a day off etc.  Can we not break up the time she has off or are we required to give the 24 hour break and there is no way to get around it.

My second question is in regards to the number of hours she will work for the week. The contract we filled out said 40 hours a week, well with a day off every week her hours of work will only be 36 hours.  Are we required to have her work 40 hours ?

1.  You realize that 8 hrs per day x 5 days = 40 hours.  Yes, your domestic has to have a full 24 hours off every 6 days.  So that means that s/he can only work 6.66 hrs per day for those six days.

Yes I realize that 5 days times 8 hours is 40 hours. 

When we signed our contract with our caregiver it stated 40 hours per week.  Are we committed to that or can she work more or less hours?

i believe both should follow what was written ön the contract. She can work m0re hours pr0vided it will be paid as overtime (refer to your pr0vincial labor standards for regular and overtime hours).

Hi evryone. Please share if you know someone/or an agncy who sponsors live in caregiver. I am a nurse,currently in Singapore willing to work as live in caregiver. I am willing to apply in Hongkong if the sponsor wants to wait..
