Leaving Canada with PR status

My wife (from the US) has had PR status for 4 years.

She has been in the US for the past six months caring for her mother.

How long is she allowed to be out of Canada before her PR status is jeopardized?

She has to remain in Canada for 2 years in every 5 year period.  So if she has never left before, then she has another 2.5 years left to remain outside.
