I've been debating on how best to get my visa from Buffalo, and then land, eventually making my way to Edmonton, Alberta.
I was originally planning on landing at Niagara Falls, and then driving cross-country through Canada to Alberta, but that may not be possible now due to timing reasons.
This is my latest idea:
1) Get PPR (still waiting, should be any day now). 2) Drive to Buffalo and get my visa on a Tuesday or Thursday 3) "Land" at Niagara Falls 4) Immediately drive back into the States (e.g. Ontario into Michigan...) and drive back home. 5) A few days later, drive to Alberta from my home, and re-enter Canada at either the Minnesota/Manitoba, North Dakota/Saskatchewan, or Montana/Alberta borders.
...are there any potential problems with this idea?
I CAN leave and re-enter Canada with just my COPR (I think it's called?), despite not having my PR card, right?
Thanks for your insight!

Based on the cost of this how about flying to Buffalo if it is timing? Edmonton to Buffalo is a good four day drive and the roads can be tricky in the Sault St. Marie region. I would advise not to take HWY 17 in Nipigon but rather HWY 11. (Did this drive all summer in the truck) The towns here are few and far between with not much to offer. Also you have to be careful to see which offices are open with IO's in the Manitoba and Saskatchewan border. Some of them in ND are purely seasonal for instance.

Hi Patricksgirls,
Thanks for your insight.
At this point, I'll either drive to Buffalo and drive back, or fly to Buffalo, fly back, then drive to Alberta. Of those two choices, flying would probably be cheapest/easiest/fastest.
I've heard some crazy things about the drive in Ontario, around Lake Superior. It's not for the faint of heart, certainly not for someone driving alone. The probability of running out of gas, hitting an animal, or breaking down in an area with no cell signal are all very high.

Why not saving the trip to Buffalo and landing at a later date, when coming back to Alberta? Just an idea.

You CANNOT re-enter in Canada with just your COPR. You will need a PR card

I think you can enter canada with just COPR, but only at land borders, you cannot fly into canada with just the COPR, then you do need the actual PR card.

This is what I've heard, too. I do wonder if it depends on the IO's mood at the land border, though. COPR is not supposed to be treated as an entry document.

It might have an impact, but that could be said about any border crossing really. People trying to enter canada at land borders with just COPR are generally going to be visa exempt anyway, so it shouldnt be a problem. I hope not anyway, planning a little trip soon and doubt i'll have PR card by then!

We're booking a trip for the end of April regardless if we have the PR card or not. Many people have flown in and out of Canada after landing without their card that are visa exempt (don't need a travel doc For travel only passport). You can definitely travel by land without it though.

Do you think I would be able to fly from toronto to US and back again after landing but before getting PR card. WHat problems might I encounter? Any insight much appreciated.
I am english and have travelled to US from canada with just visitor status before and not had any problems.
Thanks
