Hi Maverick,

I'm not from the Finance Field, though I employ accountants all the time, thus might not be able to specifically respond to your query on Banking, Mortgage, Underwriter occupations et all.

However, like Engineers, Doctors, Lawyers etc, Finance & the Banking sector is a Highly Regulated Occupation here. Usually u'll not be able to join this sector w/out specific Canadian quals & work history. Our overseas quals, even if it's assessed, might not help. U'd definitely require Canadian CGA (& the like) to succeed in this vocation.

Besides, more than a yrs Canadian experience on similar, but lower level jobs, would be a necessity. Also, regret to inform u, no bridging courses would help u either. U'd need full level studies here... CMA, CGA etc to start with & then again Specialty Certificates to go into the Banking sector, especially in Mortgage Advisory occupation. And regretfully, a CGA would take around 4+ yrs.

Be it Edmonton, Calgary etc. In Alberta, or cities of Ontario, BC etc. Your sector is both booming & highly competitive. Thankfully it is also one of the well paying sectors here. But why Edmonton-Ab, may I ask? That place is freezing all the time.

I saw your post in other locations as well, but declined to reply earlier as my response was grayish.

Hope I didn't offend u.

Hello Qorax,
Thanks for this invaluable information. Hope your Landing is good.

I have read this post. Almost all queries are answered. Just want to ask one question.

I am going to land next month. At the time of application, I have showed 17000 CAD (3 persons).
Same amount I have to show to IO at the time of landing or I can take less (10000)?

Best of Luck.

Dear qorax,

I am totally unoffended by your responses in fact they have a lot of depth and experience. Well i have chosen Edmonton simply for the fact that i have relatives there so can tide over the first few days. I have also got in touch with Accredited Mortgage Professionals Body they have courses which are online and its a federal they require 2 yrs exp in mortgages -i wrote to the institute they said that they do recoganize the indian work exp esp if you support it with pay slips and tax returns its okay.

I have mailed some of my friends in banking sector there they say you need to start off lower as a teller then work your way up mostly with lotz of support from the banks hr cell hellping you to do new courses which is funded by them.

I have written to the president of AMBA Alberta Mortgage Brokers Assoc even as per him joining the banking profession should not be much of a problem got in touch with him via linkedin.com but the main issue is that AMP qualif is mostly a marketing job this qualif may or may not be required by banks but its valued in the job markets.

Also i heard that in alberta the govt will sponsor the education of newcomers till the point that they are jobless. But need confirmation on this one.

Also i have quite a few 6-7 years exp in manuf finance sector mainly into accounts/finance/mis/budgeting/forex hence will target accountants jobs also. This apart i have around 6-7 yrs work exp into retail loans home/auto/two wheller loans all on the underwriting front. Hope this helps you to understand my profile. I am a engg+mba finance here in india.

Hi buddy,

I see u r well versed & taking the right steps & decisions. That's the way to go, man.

U r absolutely right about initial settling in a place where your friends & relatives r there. Yes, it helps a lot, be it Edmonton, Nunavut or the Yukon Territories. Once your pals r there, first & foremost the anxiety of a new place is minimized. Secondly, u get lot of Pre-knowledge, be it purchasing, renting, traveling etc. Good that u have chosen Edmonton.

As per Joining the Courses, vis-vis obtaining a Job, plz note that these 2 r separate matters altogether. Getting qualified, certified etc is pretty easy. All Univs, Insts & Prof Schools will welcome u to undertake their courses. They'd condone any requirements till the time u pay them. And mind u, it's really important to obtain Canadian Quals, so whatever case maybe, join them & get your Edn furthered.

While, later the Job Market is not as friendly as the Edn Market. Note that I deliberately wrote 'Market' for Edn. It's practically a 'business' here... Similar to many other countries too. So, do not rely on the fact that u can obtain further quals & certs, and that'd lead u to a cozy job. It won't. For any occupation, we have to start afresh here. The omnipresent Canadian Experience is all important here. Newcomers r not for high end jobs, they r to fill the Starter Gaps only. All employers, even the Govt looks it that way.

But that doesn't mean we should be disheartened. Starter & survival jobs r galore here. And they r well paying too. The 1st job might not be, but subsequent ones would definitely be. In a yrs time most ppl get into $25-35/hr pay scale. And that's in Starter Jobs. Some might be in the chosen/experienced field of occupation, or might be in another field (beyond their quals) altogether.

U can expect to be in your 'proper' banking & mortgage sector after 1yr+. And if u r lucky, the starter job could also be in the Teller's Post, as your friends suggested. Though, getting into banking, initially, is not easy. U might start with some other field, get some certifications, and then obtain a position in a bank.

Besides, banks r not the only employers for your field. Their r scores of Financial Institutions, Mortgage Firms, Secondary Market Lenders, who'll be happy to employ u. Give them a try as well. The wise thing is to build your Canadian Exp History asap. And this firms can lead u to that. Getting into a good position in a bank could be easy then. Even your institution, where u'd be getting further quals, will guide u towards such, besides the enormous value of networking that u gain from such insts.

I hope I made sense here.

All the best.

Yes & No.

1. If the amounts r huge, u must keep the Forex Receipt. Say $30-40K & above.
2. If the funds r just the CIC guided one, no need for the Receipts.

A. Those 7 r perfectly fine. (Note that Scotiabank is Good).
B. Only the Letter of Authentication is needed for the D/License.
C. U'll need the IDL for getting & driving a rent-a-car, if u desire one.

Dear Qorax, What is the letter of authentication and how can v get it from India?

Hi JH,

I've no clue on the issuance of the same from India. However, in Dubai we get it from the RTA, costs AED60  and it's provided in 5 minutes of requesting, over the counter.

It's an Explanation of our Driving License, it's tenure, expiration date, class of driving & most importantly -A No Violation Report. It has our photo as well, which is counter stamped.

In Canada, I just showed it to them, they took a photocopy, returned the original, I said I do not require, they were happy, & I was let to take the Written & the Road Test within a week. As simple as that.
