Hello all:

I will be landing at Calgary Airport later this month. I've read through the 'All you need to know about Landing" Thread at http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t36735.0.html, which is great and I highly recommend everyone read it before landing.

I will most likely need to return to the U.S. a few days after I land, but I will have a mailing address in Calgary where my PR Card can be mailed and forwarded to me. I've heard that leaving Canada after landing is not advisable, but people do it anyway, especially if they're from the U.S. I'm wondering if anyone can share their experiences with landing and returning to the U.S. after landing. I don't intend to disclose that I'm leaving Canada (unless I need to) after landing. I'll have my goods to follow list and my complete app with me for reference also.

Thanks and continued well wishes to all of you. You're one day closer!

It is not a problem at all to land and then leave Canada. Immigration officers understand that applicants may have to land (usually due to the time restraints of the visa) before they are ready to move and establish residence. Just be aware of the residency obligation for maintaining your PR status. PRs must reside in Canada for 2 out of the previous 5 years (though there are a few exceptions to that rule). So be sure to be back before you are endanger of not meeting your obligation.

I've heard that leaving Canada after landing is not advisable,

You heard bad information.
Many people leave Canada soon after landing.

Be truthful.

I love misinformation.

Thanks for your info, guys.

I would expect that they would understand all that goes into relocating from the U.S., but never take that for granted.  I'm so glad to hear that it sounds like it will be OK. And yes, honesty is the best policy.

This is very exciting!

I agree with the PPs. I landed in June and returned and have been living in the US since. The IO actually asked me to give him a family members name and address in Canada, so they could send my PR card there. It is something they are used to. Be prepared for them to ask you why though - and just explain why. Be prepared well with your documents and things will go smoothly.

Thanks!

Aside from my PR application and all my civil and identification docs, do I need anything additional?

I am on H1B visa (work visa) in USA and I am not from Visa exempt country. If and when I land in canada, come back to USA and travel to Canada again without the PR card, would I have a problem? I do have a Visitors Visa till Nov. 2011. Would I need travel document from Buffalo before entering Canada without PR card?
