Landing and proof of funds

Hi,

I have recently received my stamped passports.

I am planning to land in April. The maintenance funds I had to show during the application process was ~C$20,000.00 which is shown as a combination of my bank balance and other instruments like debentures etc.

when landing in Canada do I have to bring in a draft for C$20,000 and physically produce it as proff of funds or can I deposit an equalling amount ~£13,000 in in local UK bank and produce a bank statement at the immigration desk?

I need this information urgently as I am planning to return back to UK after landing and stay here for about 6 months before moving to Canada and will need this money.

I will therefore loose at least £1500 in converting my funds to C$ and converting them back to £ which I would like to avoid.

You should take either demand draft for the amount to any bank in Canada, travelers checks or cash. For safty carry a reasonable amount of cash and the balance amount as DD or TC. It is up to you. If you carry cash exceeding $10,000/- you have to declare it at the customs counter.

This question has not been answered....

I would say the UK bank statement should be acceptable as proof of funds. There is no place where it is stated that proof of funds must be in traveller's cheque, cash or bank draft. It only says 'available and transferrable'.

I have the same view on this whole thing, but my agaent says I should carry a draft in canadian dollars and if not he will not be responsible for any problems that I face at immigration.

When are you planning to land? I can at least follow your experience if you are landing before me.

I will be landing sometimes in March and don't worry, I'll post my experience. I'll make sure I have enough funds in my account to meet the requirement. Will be carrying some in cash and the rest on a recently printed bank statement.

There is a response from London Visa Office in that thread confirming that bank statements are acceptable at POE contrary to the opinion of some forum members.

Disclosure of funds
If you are carrying more than C$10,000, tell a Canadian official when you arrive in Canada. If you do not tell an official, you may be fined or put in prison. These funds could be in the form of:

•cash
•securities in bearer form (for example, stocks, bonds, debentures, treasury bills) or
•negotiable instruments in bearer form (for example, bankers' drafts, cheques, travellers' cheques or money orders).

In support of your application, you should provide proof of unencumbered and readily transferable funds in a convertible

currency that is available to you for settlement in Canada (for you and your family members):

• current bank certification letter; or

• evidence of savings balance; or

• fixed or time deposit statements.

 
 

When first arriving in Canada as a permanent resident you will also need to show immigration officials at the port of entry that you have sufficient transferable funds for your settlement in Canada.

 
You can show bank statements or saving statements or value of your property after the repayment of your mortgage. 
 

If you have been offered a job or if you are going to work in Canada on a temporary work permit you may present proof of your salary.
