Hello All,

I am a landed immigrant in Canada (Indian passport holder). I have to make a trip to Chicago for official reason for a day - fly in the morning and return back in the evening. What visa do I need to enter the US, how long does it take to get one, what is the procedure.

Your help will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Buddy,

Any visa national(Eg :Indians) who wants to enter the USA needs a B1 or B2 Visa..as u said u are entering USA on an official visit so u can apply for B1 visa which is granted to those individuals who are entering US for business purpose and B2 for touristic or leisure purpose .You can contact the nearest US consulate wherever you are located in Canada to obtain your visa and can avail further info on what all procedures you require to follow to obtain one.Hope this info is of some assistance to you

B1 B2 is the visa you have to apply for , you need to fill up online application and take an appointment for interview.

If your interview is successfull they will give you visa for 5 or 10 years.

Thanks SandySurrey, Sharif11, Yogi7890 for the responses.

I am trying to go through the consulate website, and find that wait time for appointment and processing can be up to a week or so. Do you have any specific information about the wait times. Will the business visa be a multiple entry? I have a trip coming up next Wednesday which might be tight at this point, and another trip coming up next month. A multiple entry will be really helpful, but do not know if that will be the case. If anyone has information on this, it will be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi

if you landed recently and did not settle yourself with a job and a residential address in your own ( a rented house by you or own by lease etc..),then it depends how you are able to prove before the US visa section officer that you have strong tie ups with Canada for your return from US.

If you have a satisfactory  job in Canada, that could at least be a plus point. If the Consular officer is satisfied he could grant you Multiple entry visa up to 10 year period.

Still without getting an appointment, you cannot apply for a US visitor visa, from Canada. You can try for appointment in any consulates in Canada.

"The U.S. Consulate General in Toronto handles all visa applications by appointment only. Visa appointments can be made online or by phone from Canada at (647) 955-3736 (calling from the greater Toronto area) or (877) 341-2441 (calling from other parts of Canada or the United States). There are no service fees or additional toll charges for the web or telephone services beyond standard data and telephone rates".

During the interview at US Consulate, be prepared to answer that why you did not apply for a US visitor visa from your country before arriving in Canada as immigrant.
