Question!  Speaking of patties and bringing stuff with you...I have two things I want to bring especially for hubby: ackee and roasted breadfruit (does anybody still do this?  He asked for it, and my mother is determined he shall have it, so far be it from me to get between them!).  Now the ackee I will bring the canned one, so I don't think that should be an issue, but I keep hearing it would be best not to declare the breadfuit as it will most likely be confiscated.  I am uneasy with not declaring things I should, and uneasy with bringing something I shouldn't bother to because it will only end up confiscated (you cannot tell me those airport people don't empty the bins and take the things home and I am not feeding any of them!), so has anyone in recent times done this and what was your experience?

CharlieD - Congrats on getting thru.  Our family also carries both on a regular basis.  Best to roast the breadfruit and scrape it.  The ackee, you can boil it briefly, drain, rub oil on it and package in a zip loc bag.  Fresh ackee from home is the best.  We can buy the canned up here (at least in Toronto we can) and it's ok but fresh is best.  Also, make sure to bring some Magnums ($2 at the airport) for hubby  Wink  I also find the spice buns here are almost double the price from JA.  ohhh and hubby often gets mint, cercy and guinea hen....to help with them ailments.  Think about the comforts you have in JA and check with hubby cuz many of them you won't be able to get in the north.

Hubby & I are still waiting on the sponsorship approval for our son.  I can't believe the timelines are over 80 days now.  I remember when hubby got through stage 1 in 30 days.  We really hope he can come for the christmas.  with these quick timelines from KGN it may still be possible.  hoping for approval this month.  we sent our app in february 2012

c'mon CIC ....let's get those sponorship apps moving.

Thanks Kym, AliCat and TOgirl!

TOgirl, I hope the waiting time keeps getting better at KG, considering how the times at CPC-M are lengthening due to backlog work.   Good luck getting your son home for Christmas! Smiley

In terms of food I am planning to bring the ackee, and the breadfruit, and we still have most of the top tier of our wedding cake soaking in rum at my mother's house.  By now that thing must be potent, haha!  More than anything hubby wants me to bring spices and seasonings for him to cook, especially jerk seasoning and pepper sauces.

What I am bringing to keep me reminded of home are other things like my prized baby pictures of my niece and nephews, my favourite novels from my extensive collection, LOL, and some other tangible things I feel will make my new home feel like home.  Oh, and hubby wants me to bring a Jamaican flag, full-sized and official, to fly with the Canadian flag in our front yard.

Well, let me share something with you guys from first hand experience. I get "pulled" for a "random" search almost everytime I travel. The second to last time the customs officer directly told me they profile me. My best male friend is also flagged this way too. Probably our appearance. Anyway, roast breadfruit and ackee prepared in the manner TOgirl mentioned is allowed as is fish, and seasoning such as fresh thyme. Bush such as cerasee, jackanna, mint, sinkle bible, fevergrass etc are also fine. What is mainly banned is a few specific items. #1 Scallion #2 any form of meats, including patties. #3 yam.  I have brought pear, naseberry and mango, as well as peeled cane successfuly even after being thoroughly dig up. Puss n dog nuh have the same luck, just sharing mi experience. If they find the patties, or any meat product they take it.
