I am in the same shoes, but fortunately for me I applied before the new rules. (Even though I have served as the Technical director of a Company for 2 years before resigning and setting up my own small business - as  a matter of fact I could apply under the new rules as well)
In my view and opinion, a person running and managing an IT consulting company deals with a vast field and a variety of IT solutions for different clients and companies. We manage different Networks and in fact different people from these client's companies. We liaise with Managers, Directors and Finance directors of various companies and manage their IT budget with and for them.
We meet, recommend, Advise and sell to them various technologies and then purchase and implement such technologies for them.
In view of the above mentioned facts, I would definitely say YES, but the million dollar question is, do the IO's or CIC see it that way too.
Well, I don't know and cannot say, but I think it is worth giving it a go with a very good cover letter explaining your day to day routine and with various scenarios. Bear in mind that the person you are addressing might not be an IT person nor somebody who will be able to understand your point of view.

not in the same situation, but New Delhi forms recently underwent a small change and they have added the following section in tworf Experience docs.

"If you have experience as a self-employed person, provide copies of:
• business/company registration documents,
• proof of business conducted with clients (invoices, bills, client references)
• balance sheets,
• income tax returns, and/or
• proof of your licence to practice (if you are a private practitioner)"

so, you may be able to give it a shot...

there was a lady n the forum - charmeuse... she was in a similar situation. Her husband was the owner and she was a director. She tried to prove that she was an employee and did not pave much heat to 0213 while making final docs. She was rejected.

she doesn't come on the forum any more. But, you can still check her past posts...

But, since then this new change has come in and maybe you can apply if you show yourself as self-employed...

Aanbaaan,
You r a star Mate!!.
I have actually prepared my case to include all of the above,. Thank God, I have been registered from Day1 and have all of the above and a lot more, including references from over 18 Corporate Clients, as I know that to justify self -employment could be a night mare sometimes. Your post has relaxed and distressed me a lot. I am a lot more confident now. I had been trying to find anything like what you have written above from the CIC web-site. I hope that London CIC will accept all of the above and what I have as proof.
