Hey sogwap  , when did you land?
How many months have you searched for jobs?

I started applying for IT jobs in Jan 2010.
However technically I'm still a visitor from the States...

After 2+ year long distant relationship with my Canadian g/f, I move here in August 2009 from the States. At the time I was under the impression immigration (PR) would take 6-8 months before I could work.
She has 5 year old, which precludes her moving to the States away from the birth father.
We married Oct. 2009.
After looking at the details of PR found out that FBI report can takes 3 months or more. My first set of finger prints to the FBI were rejected after waiting over 3 months. A month later (last month) I sent a new set after finding a professional finger printing service. We are now waiting (again) for the FBI report so that we can file for Sponsorship/PR.

After lots of searching I found out my profession (NOC 0213) allows me to get a work permit under NAFTA. I feel confident that when given a job opportunity, I will get a work permit under NAFTA.

From Jan-April I did some web/programing work for a friend. However two weeks ago I was told that project is on hold indefinitely. It remains to be seen if I will be paid.

Part of me says I should have kept my IT Administrator job back in the States, get married, and PR status before moving here. However this being second marriage for both of us. I seriously doubt I would have married before living together.

In hindsight if I knew the FBI report took 3+ months I would have requested the FBI report in July 2009. However we had no idea, we both just wanted to be with each other. Because of the difficulty getting PR and any job, and the tremendous stress on my new Canadian wife to bear the full work load, I am tempted to move back to the States to work (if she doesn't ask me to leave first), and sort through moving here when I feel welcome as a Permanent Resident. Ironically she moved an hour from Toronto to this (small) community, largely for my benefit, since I was living on a farm back in Indiana. However Toronto logistically has lots more job opportunities than here. And an 1 1/2 hour commute has it's own toll.

Sorry for the long dissertation. Like many it's been frustrating to say the least.

Thanks for sharing the detail . I fully agree with you that we have to settle for less initially. I am having 9 years of IT exp and working as a Project Lead.
