I got AIP/OWP sometime in October 2011 (applied in October 2010).  Still waiting for that.  A friend of mine on a similar timeline got his 1st and 2nd stage approval in September 2011.  The difference was that he had no implied worker status, so I have the feeling they expedite those cases so that fewer people are unemployed for 2 years while they wait.  When I called CIC, they confirmed that I will probably not get 2nd stage until June 2012, based on the backlog. 
I have stopped caring about the wait.  I go back and forth to the USA with my OWP in hand and they don't seem to mind when I return.   I don't do it often, but with aging parents & friends with babies, I'm not willing to miss them anymore.  The border agents seem very reasonable and because I'm only going for visits, it doesn't count against my claim to be a resident.
