My husband sponsored me from Canada --and about 4 months ago i received a letter from Buffalo consulate in US that they have received my case and created a file number.
After that I again received a letter from them asking me to provide additional information  that what i did one year prior to our marriage.I provided them the information they needed.

I am permanent resident in US and our 2 kids are US citizens.

sinse last 3 months they did not communicated with me. I send them an email asking them to provide me the status of my application and how long it will take.Consulate replied that email , stating that :
"We have requested background information from other government offices(s).  Unfortunately, we cannot provide a date when the processing of your application will be complete"

I need to know that what they mean with that "background information from other government offices".
thanks

The CIC processing office requests background checks, facilitated through CSIS, for each PR applicant.  CSIS will interface with agencies in countries where you have lived to research your background to be sure that neither you nor your family members present a threat to Canadian security.  This is different from the criminal clearances you submit with your application showing that you have never been arrested or convicted of a crime.  CSIS researches your employment and address history, and your ties to schools, clubs, organizations, etc., that you've been associated with.  How long it takes to complete the background check depends on how much time it takes for CSIS to get responses from the agencies they've sent inquiries to.
