usually it should be periodically updated through the software you install . This is from experience I have using tomtom in the UK so not sure if it is any different in Canada.

But how do you instal the software?, is the question.  In  a separate GPS, you can download new maps onto your computer and then connect the GPS to the computer.  How do you do this with an in-car GPS?  Is there a memory card you can take out and insert into your computer to transfer the new data?

The map software has to be manually updated. Check the map version that your gps is using and it can be updated yearly by purchasing an update disk or SD card.

The map doesn't say the version.  I guess I have to rely on the info given by the manufacturer.  Thanks, anyways.
