Immigrating to Canada

Hi,
I am needing some help/guidance by somebody who has gone/going through a similar situation for some advise.
I am living in Edmonton on a WHP with my spouse/common law partner and have been together for a year as of november 11th 2010, I first came to canada on 18th of January 2010, met my partner later on and my WHP which will expire January 2012 (I was lucky enough to be granted a 2 year whp), I am an Australian citizen and my fiance' is a Canadian citizen.
We have tried calling to speak to a CIC agent through the 1888 242 2100 and NEVER get through to anybody. We have gone to Canada place in Edmonton but are told to go online or listen to the automated phone line. We have also spoken to a lawyer although they didnt seem too legitimate and didn't listen to our case. We even went to Vegreville to try and speak to somebody there as we couldn't even call up first to see if this was allowed- which its not.
We are choosing for my fiance' to apply to become a sponser, however to get to the first stay the general time frame is 11months and my whp will have expired during that time. I have been told to apply for an extension however I am not currently employed and have just come back from a visit from Australia for my fiance' to meet my family etc so do I apply for a WHP again or would it be a work permit that I apply for?
So here is where it gets complicated-
I am 3 months pregnant and my fiance's mother has just been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer- we need to be here in Canada.
I have Alberta healthcare now and have made sure that even after my WHP expires I can remain a visitor for 6 months and will be entitled to healthcare during this time- will I have to leave the country in order to activate a visitor visa? I may be unfit to fly by then. Please if anybody can give some advice on this matter it would mean a lot. Thankyou for reading.

Seems to me, you are eligible for spousal sponsorships. Read more from this post:
