I filled in IM5406 for myself as an applicant and entered all the details. However, this form needs to be filled in by the spouse too but there is no way in the form to differentiate on who is filling the form.

Did I make any sense ?

You will mention your name in "Applicant" column and your spouse will be in next column. Same thing will be repeated by your spouse but he/she will sign it with his/her signature. Make Sure while your spouse fill the form then he/she needs to put name in Spouse/Common law partner section NOT in Principal Applicant. You will remain principal applicant even in spouse's form.
