can a american cross the border and back after visiting for 6 months ? im helping a friend who just got out of surgery so this is important matter plz reply asap thanx

Yes.  No passport is required at this time.  You must have your current drivers license and birth certificate.  Check with the border services to make sure of any restrictions that might pertain to you.
