** I did ask this in another part of the forum in the tax part but it seems pretty vacant there. Hoping I can get more help here** P.S. Sorry for posting many threads today. I am not yet a PR and do not have AIP yet. However, I am a resident of Canada for tax purposes. I am filing a tax return this year so that hubby is entitled to GST and Working Income Tax Benefit. I am just curious as to which address I mail my tax return to. Would it be this address: International Tax Services Office Post Office Box 9769, Station T Ottawa, ON K1G 3Y4 Canada If it helps to know, I am currently still residing in Canada. Thanks in advance for any help/tips you can provide for us.

I've always sent my tax returns the same place as hubby. I never sent it to the international section. I've also e-filed etc. See what the call centre says.

I think we are filing our taxes out on the same form (filing jointly) and mailing them to the same location. I don't know the address though, as we are not that far along...

Hey suenim, I thought we couldn't efile? Is that because you have already worked here before and filed previous returns?
QCSunshine: What do you mean by file jointly? Me and hubby linked our returns together using the tax software but it gave two returns for us to print out. One for him and one for me. When we talked to CRA they said there is no such thing as "filing jointly" like in the US.
Ugh...so confused.

My first filing was sent via mail. We did file jointly though. But since then I have been e-filing. I'm not sure how e-filing would work without a SIN though. Maybe that's why you have to mail it. I've had a SIN since 2006 though. Even though we filed jointly we also got two packages. One I mailed in and his was done electronically that time.

I never file jointly. I'll file my own but as a common law and will list my bfs SIN and gross income that's it. Question is he has a new permanant SIN. Do I use this one or his old temporary one

What is everyone meaning by filing jointly? How do I know if I have or not?
kelKel: I think you need to inform Service Canada that he will no longer be using his old temporary SIN and that he has since gotten a permanent SIN. I would apply with the new SIN and attach a note stating that you have informed Service Canada of the permanent SIN and would like to have it processing with the new permanent SIN.
emmagail: I only have a temporary taxation number that was given to me by CRA a couple of months ago. We used H & R Block last year and they seemed to screw up a lot on hubby's return last year. This year we got Ufile and doing it ourselves. I would recommend getting Ufile because it is pretty much the same program expect $20 cheaper.

I asked a tax person here if my husband and I could file together or if we had to do it separately. I thought I understood that we could file together, which could be useful if he can claim me as a deduction or something in the household, since I wasn't working. I will have to ask again when I talk to her again in the next week or so, to try to better understand it all. I will post here if I find out anything more. (And I don't know if it differs by province, for the provincial taxes.)

Also, for those of us without a SIN number, here is the link to apply for a temporary number (ITN) to use to file for taxes: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/t1261/README.htmlIt says to allow 6 weeks to process it. I don't know if you have to have it to file taxes or not, but I asked for one, and am still waiting to receive it.

QCSunshine: Well technically there is no such thing as filing together from what we were instructed from the man at CRA. He explained that we would both need to file our own returns. So that is what we are doing. And as far as the temporary tax number. You can file without one and simply place 000-000-000 in where it asks for SIN. Then include a letter explaining that you have requested a temporary tax number and will notify them when you receive it. Of course you can always wait to get it but that is just in case you get impatient.

It has helped tremendously. We are trying to get this finished tonight so we can mail it of tomorrow morning or Tuesday at the latest. Hopefully we don't screw anything up. That is why I want to make sure I get the right address. When are you going on vacation? That sounds so exciting and fun.

I always use ufile and then send it electronically and then get direct deposit. I hope I get a big return We're going to go somewhere warm end of April. Having trouble deciding where to go.

i don't know how the software works but if u fill the taxes through the forms they send u u have the option to add the name, SIN number and income of ur spouse...like this u will b processed as a 2 member family; i think each of u has to fill in his/her own form and add each other respectively (u write his details in ur form and ur spouse writes ur details in his forms); the forms will be submitted to the same place; did the CRA officer advised u the same on the phone?
the international address u said is maybe for Canadians who live outside Canada and fill their taxes
